Our Commitment to Community Medicine |
| |
| |
Our Family Medicine residents and faculty are committed to providing the best possible care to the community and using community resources to benefit our patients. We are fortunate to be situated in a community with multifaceted needs and resources. This allows us to interface with the community, thereby providing a rich learning opportunity. We are proud that our residents are active physicians in the Mon Valley Community. Many residents have initiated special interest projects such as: HIV Education for African American men; Self-Empowerment for Women who have experienced domestic violence; Prevention of Diabetes Education of primary school age children. The following are highlights of our partnerships with the community. |

The 9th Street Clinic |
| |
| |
| The 9th Street Clinic is a free clinic for the uninsured established in 2007 in McKeesport. It was established by our residency program leadership and faculty and continues to be administered through our residency office. Residents are offered a longitudinal elective to work in The 9th St. Clinic usually one half day a month, or more if desired, over the course of a whole year. This clinic gives exposure to the problems of the uninsured and underserved and the inadequacies of the current welfare system. Problems are often seen at later stages than usual and residents get an idea of how to provide good care in a low resource setting. |

Teenage Pregnancy Program |
| |
| |
| McKeesport has one of the highest incidences of teen pregnancies in Allegheny County. In partnership with the McKeesport High School, our residency program initiated a teenage pregnancy program, "Link to Latterman", to address the medical and psychosocial concerns of the pregnant females. We work together with the Teen Parenting Program to help pregnant young women get their much needed prenatal care. Teen moms can come and see our resident physicians at the health Center and at times our residents will provide education to the Teen Parenting Program at the High School as well. A variety of topics are covered. |

Domestic Violence -- Medical Advocacy |
| |
| |
| Residents and medical students visit our local shelter, Womansplace, where they address the women’s medical problems and initiate appropriate treatment and interventions. Residents learn about the impact of domestic violence on women, children and families by listening to the clients’ own stories and working with the counselors. |
