As a major academic medical center and teaching hospital, UPMC McKeesport has been committed to the education of physicians for over 100 years. One component of that commitment is UPMC McKeesport’s involvement in the clinical education of medical students.
We are a primary-care training site for 3rd and 4th Year University of Pittsburgh and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) medical students. In addition, to the core rotations in Family Medicine offered to students from our affiliated medical schools, elective clerkships are available to medical students from the following affiliated medical schools:
- Kansas City University of Medicine and BioSciences (KCUMB)
- Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM)
- Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM)
- Lincoln Memorial University - DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM)
- Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM)
- University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM)
- West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM)
Unfortunately, we are unable to take students on Clerkships without an affiliation agreement in place. New affiliation agreements take approximately 9-12 months.

Housing/Parking/Meals: Our housing is free and is located inside the Hospital. Housing is arranged on a first-come basis since there is 1 room available for each FM and IM rotation. Each room includes a private bathroom with shower. Housing is for those students who live 35 miles or more from McKeesport PA. Parking is free in the garage and medical students are given a swipe badge for access during their rotation. For medical students not rotating through Internal Medicine a $30 deposit is required and will be returned when the swipe badge is turned in. Meal vouchers are given for use in the hospital cafeteria. A Subway restaurant is also onsite in the hospital and accepts cash or credit cards.
Didactics are available on all rotations and medical students are encouraged to attend. Daily conferences are held at the hospital, which include grand rounds, journal club, CPC’s and tumor board. Wednesday afternoon core lectures on various topics and workshops specific to primatry care held at the The Latterman Family Health Center Conference Room. OMM lectures are monthly.
Resources: The hospital and IM and FM outpatient centers all utilize Electronic Medical Records and have Wi-Fi available throughout. UpToDate access accessible throughout the hospital.

The Family Medicine Rotation for medical students typically consists of both inpatient and outpatient experiences, and can be tailored to individual needs. Both the UPMC McKeesport Hospital and Latterman Family Health Center utilize Electric Health Records and have WiFi available throughout.
Family Medicine Inpatient: Medical students are immersed in the family medicine inpatient teaching service. The team consists of a family medicine attending and senior and junior residents. Each morning there is morning report, teaching rounds and follow-up on assigned patients. Daily conferences are held at the hospital, which include grand rounds, journal club, CPC’s and tumor board. The student is encouraged to attend these conferences.
Family Medicine Outpatient: The Latterman Family Health Center (LFHC) is the Outpatient Center where residents see their continuity patients. The medical student works with residents and attendings, sees patients, and is precepted by the family medicine attendings. The Family Health Center provides a wide spectrum of services for the community including: Adult care, Women’s Health, Obstetrics, family planning, Sports Medicine, as well as Pediatrics. Students receive a well-rounded out-patient experience at the LFHC Center.
Didactics: Wednesday afternoons at the LFHC Center are core lectures and workshops on various topics specific to primary care. OMM is monthly.
Community Opportunities: The residency program has always maintained a strong commitment to improving the overall healthcare needs of the community. There are opportunities for students to participate in community medicine programs and visit community agencies and healthcare clinics; i.e., The 9th Street Clinic, Womansplace. Also as part of the rotation, arrangements can be made for the student to make a home visit with the family medicine attending who specializes in geriatrics.
Sports Medicine Opportunities: In addition to the sports medicine opportunities in the Outpatient Setting, there are sports medicine events throughout the year. Events that medical students can partipate under the supervision of a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician include:
